The arrangement of pieces of Paua shell form a stylized Jesus figure. The swirl of beads represents the Spirit of Christ being committed to his Father.
"Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last."
from Clarke's Commentary on the Bible
"Into thy hands I commend my spirit - Or, I will commit my spirit - I deposit my soul in thy hands. Another proof of the immateriality of the soul, and of its separate existence when the body is dead."
The crucifix is not a very comfortable symbol for me so my crosses usually focus on the risen Christ through my use of resurrection symbols. I started the embellishment of this cross during Holy Week, completing it on Easter Eve or Holy Saturday which proved very meaningful for me.
